Global History of Empires is a doctoral programme of the University of Turin. It is designed to provide an educational and research environment for dissertation research by doctoral students in the fields of early modern, modern, and contemporary history, with particular attention to its global dimension. It offers an interdisciplinary degree for students who desire to study global issues such as conflict, migration, human rights, governance, environment, energy, technology, sustainable development and the challenges these issues present for lasting peace, equality and prosperity. The PhD programme is based on the assumption that empires did not belong exclusively to the past, and that they left their imprint on the contemporary world in a variety of ways that we often fail to appreciate. Its aim is to enrich the understanding of the historical origins of the complex mosaic of institutions, practices, habits of thought and organization that make up the modern world.

Established in 1964 with the donation of Luigi Einaudi’s collection, nowadays the Foundation represents a landmark for social sciences. The Einaudi Foundation was created thanks to the passion for knowledge of the Einaudi family. Through their gesture they wanted to make the historical and cultural heritage contained in the library accessible. A gesture that aims to keep alive Luigi Einaudi’s values and principles of cultural freedom and thought. Since July 1970 the Foundation has been based in the historic Palazzo d’Azeglio in the centre of Turin, courtesy of Fiat, which owned it. Over the years, the continuous growth of the library and the archive, together with the support given to young scholars through the scholarships, the promotion of publications and the organization of seminars and conferences have allowed the Foundation to fulfill its mission, making knowledge increasingly more accessible.

Young Scholars Initative

Through the Young Scholars Initiative (YSI), the Institute for New Economic Thinking provides support to the next generation of new economic thinkers. YSI provides a collaborative, open environment for young scholars to explore their interest in new economic thinking, and facilitates connections with the Institute’s vast network of economists. Throughout the year, members of the YSI community collaborate on hundreds of projects like webinars, workshops, and reading groups. Each project provides a different avenue for the exploration of new economic thinking. They may be held virtually (discussions, webinars, reading groups) or in person (workshops, pre-conferences). To support young scholars who want to organize an event that explores new economic thinking outside of the YSI community, YSI offers 15+ event grants a year.
