Cultural events @ Gallerie d'Italia - Torino (Saturday, May 24, 2.30 pm)
At the Gallerie d’Italia – Torino, a special plenary session of the Conference will take place, a round table entitled “The History of Ideas in the Social Sciences and Humanities: Role and Perspectives”, featuring contributions from social scientists at Università di Torino.
Speakers will include:
-
Mario Cedrini and Stefano Fiori (economists and conference organizers)
-
Carlo Capello (anthropologist, with Lia Zola)
-
Federica Morelli (historian)
-
Alice Scavarda (sociologist)
The roundtable, which will have an informal character, aims to foster a discussion on the role that "histories of thought" play across different disciplines, their current place in academia, and the potential synergies and differences among various fields of knowledge. The objective is to highlight approaches that explore the links between disciplinary practices, institutions, and cultural and social dynamics, recognizing how the history of thought can enrich both theoretical and applied research.
Following the roundtable, there will be a staged reading titled “Markets and Morality: An Impossible Dialogue Between Adam Smith and Friedrich von Hayek”, written by Mario Morroni and Riccardo Soliani, and performed by conference participants.
Morroni, Full Professor of Political Economy at the University of Pisa, has long led an important initiative in “Educational Theatre,” which has inspired recent teaching-theatre projects (CAOS, CAmpus On Stage) in the social sciences at the Luigi Einaudi Campus, promoted by Mario Cedrini and Alice Scavarda.
This work presents a comparative exploration of classical liberalism and neoliberalism through the imaginative device of an "impossible interview" between Adam Smith and Friedrich von Hayek, conducted by a contemporary economist. The presence of the Gatekeeper of the Afterlife introduces a touch of levity and freshness, offering incisive commentary grounded in ‘common sense.’
The piece seeks to balance academic rigor with an engaging and dynamic dialogic format. It forms part of a broader project by the authors exploring the use of theatrical language as a tool for education and knowledge dissemination. Central themes include the relationship between ethics and economics—a particularly relevant lens given that Adam Smith was foremost a moral philosopher, while Friedrich von Hayek, whose work spans economics and political science, offered influential insights into the economics of knowledge and the interplay between the individual and society.
Finally, Gallerie d'italia - Torino will introduce participants to the exhibition by American artist Carrie Mae Weems, organized in collaboration with Aperture and curated by Sarah Meister, former curator of the photography department at MoMA in New York. It is part of the main program of the second edition of EXPOSED Torino Foto Festival, titled Beneath The Surface, curated by Menno Liauw and Salvatore Vitale.
The internationally renowned artist Carrie Mae Weems, known for her photographic explorations of cultural identity, sexism, and class belonging.
The exhibition will feature "Preach", a world premiere of a project commissioned by Intesa Sanpaolo specifically for this occasion, integrated into a powerful retrospective showcasing works from Weems’ most famous photographic series. Visitors will be guided through the artist’s entire career, following a deeply personal and spiritual journey.
