Markets, Productivity, and Happiness in a Historical Perspective

The boundaries of Complexity Economics

Gloria Sandye, University Cote d'Azur

Since the 80s with the work of the Santa Fe perspective, the complexity approach is developing in economics as a nebula of works which evolved out of the many orientations of mainstream economics but also of heterodoxy. The complexity approach uses new tools, provides different kind of explanations and focus on different questions than traditional economics. The coherence of such approach lies in the relationships and hierarchy between its ontological, epistemological, methodological and conceptual aspects. The objective of this proposal is to define the contours of the approach of complexity by examining in detail each of these four aspects, to stress how they are intertwined and logically interdependent.
